The possibility of a hoarding disorder diagnosis increases by 20% every five years of age, ranking the prevalence of the compulsive, not-letting-go behavior highest among the elderly population.

This webinar examines the clinical features of hoarding disorder and its evidence-based treatment options, with particular attention to this mental health disorder in older adults. The discussion covers local community responses and resources, along with successful assessments and interventions you can integrate into your care setting.

Participants in this webinar will be able to:

  • Describe the DSM criteria (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) for hoarding disorder.
  • Describe three consequences unique to older adults with hoarding disorder.
  • Explain characteristics associated with hoarding disorder in older adults.
  • Apply five techniques for interacting with an older adult presenting with hoarding disorder.

About the presenter:

Catherine Ayers, Ph.D.

Catherine Ayers, Ph.D., ABPP, is a Section Chief at the VA San Diego Healthcare System, Professor in the University of California San Diego Department of Psychiatry, and faculty member of the Joint Doctoral Program in Clinical Psychology for San Diego State University and the University of California San Diego. Her research is focused on the characterization, treatment development, and community intervention implementation for older adults with hoarding disorder. She has published over 85 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters on late-life hoarding. Her research has been funded by the International OCD Foundation, County of San Diego, National Institute of Mental Health, and U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Recently, her research has focused on the delivery of personalized treatments, digital delivery, loneliness, and functional interventions for hoarding.
